01 May Through the Decades: Upper School Field Trip to the National Museum of American History
Students from The Legacy School took a spring field trip to Washington, D.C., where students explored the Smithsonian National Museum of American History. Using a “Through the Decades” Photo Scavenger Hunt provided by The Legacy School’s Founding Teacher and Social Studies Department Head Ms. Lisa, students reinforced facts learned in The Legacy School Social Studies Curriculum by exploring exhibits. Students identified exhibits by decade, including 1910s: Universal Suffrage, Early industrial machinery and World War I, 1920s: Farm Machinery, Polygraph/Lie Detector Machines, Women’s Right to Vote, Pay Disparities, 1929 Stock Market Crash, and Inventions; 1930s: Great Depressions, Dust Bowl, and New Deal; 1940s: World War II, U-Boats, Tank Battles, Board games, and Illustrated Magazines; 1950s: Bombs, Korean War, and Russia; 1960s: Cuba Missile Crisis, Integration of Lunch Counters, and Martin Luther King, Jr.; 1970s: Vietnam War, Nixon, Woodstock, Star Wars, and Voting Rights; 1980s: Fall of the Berlin Wall and Women’s Movement; and 1990s: Modern Military, McDonald’s, and Coca-Cola.
